Fiordland New Zealand Nature Observations
What To Bring On Your Nature Observation

For all our trips you should bring the following:

  1. Waterproof jacket – never venture into Fiordland without it.
  2. Warm clothing – this is a mountainous environment and weather can change quickly. Hat and gloves are the best items to keep those extremities toasty.
  3. Sunscreen and sunhat – the sun can be fierce and the air is so pure little UV is absorbed.
  4. Camera – bring lots of film or make sure your memory card has plenty of space. You will take far too many photos.
  5. Lunch and snacks – there’s a great selection of cafes in Te Anau to purchase a tasty bite to eat.
  6. Water bottle – rivers and streams in Fiordland are good to drink, but you should always be stocked up before you leave.
  7. Bug spray – yep! You will meet the occasional sandfly or two…...

For walking trips you should also bring:

  1. Walking boots – these should be comfortable and worn in. Some tracks are uneven and trainers often don’t provide the ankle support.
  2. Day pack – again this should be comfortable.

We can help you arrange the hiring of this equipment in Te Anau.

For overnight trips, you should also bring:

  1. Sleep wear.
  2. Clothes to wear while kayaking.
  3. Comfortable shoes - for wearing on the boat.
  4. Beverages – alcoholic or otherwise.
