Freedom walk the 32 kilometre Routeburn Track. It is an intermediate-level track and is usually completed over 2-3 days. Extend your walk by connecting with the Greenstone/Caples routes for a more challenging tramp. The Routeburn Track can be entered at either the Divide or The Routeburn Shelter and walked in either direction West to East, or East to West (depending on your huts booked). Our packages are designed to get you on and off the track, no matter if you start or finish in Queenstown or Te Anau. It can be confusing, so feel free to contact us, we know the area well and are here to help!

Routeburn Track Info

The Routeburn Track is located in the southwest of the South Island and runs between the head of Lake Wakatipu and State Highway 94, the Te Anau /Milford Road. The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand’s most popular tracks with approximately 13,000 walkers completing the track each year.

Most walkers take 3 days (2 nights) to complete the whole track but longer or shorter options are available. A wide variety of native birds may be seen or heard along the track. Tussock grasslands, herb fields, beech forests, and bog plant communities are all passed through while walking on the track. Spectacular views of U-shaped and hanging valleys dominate the landscape as you pass numerous waterfalls and alpine lakes.

Tracknet provide timely transport connections to each end of the Routeburn Track. Tracknet’s service connects with The Divide Shelter on the Milford Road. This is one start/finish point. Travelling to or away from the Divide, Tracknet services include Milford Sound, Te Anau and Queenstown.

The other start/finish point of the Routeburn Track is the Routeburn Shelter, which is at the Mount Aspiring National Park end of the Routeburn Track near Glenorchy. Travelling to or away from The Routeburn Shelter, Tracknet are able to arrange transport for you on Info & Track’s bus service.

Queenstown, Glenorchy, and Te Anau have a full range of accommodation available. Queenstown and Te Anau have shopping and hire services to cater to all walkers’ needs.
