Packing for the Routeburn Track in Fiordland requires careful planning due to its remote location and variable weather conditions. You must be self-dependent for your trip and have the right gear to keep you warm and safe.
We have compiled a comprehensive packing list to ensure you are well-prepared for the hike. A few items are optional, but don't skimp on your warm and waterproof gear!
While the list may seem extensive, remember that preparation is key to your comfort and safety on the Routeburn Track. The weather in Fiordland can change quickly, and exposed areas on the track can make you susceptible to the elements. If things don't go as planned, it's much better to be prepared.
Handy Tips
Choose familiar, well-broken-in gear. Test your boots, pack, and clothing, and experiment with food options before your walk.
Speaking of food - you will never regret having a proper meal for the first night! It may be a bit more to carry on the first day, but if you can manage it, a pre-cooked hearty casserole out of the freezer served on rice or pasta will make you the envy of the hut.
If you're trekking in a group, consider sharing items to carry, such as food, cooking equipment, sunscreen and first aid kit, to lighten the individual load. More can be carried by stronger members of the group.
Keep frequently used things in a place that is easily accessible without needing to take off your pack. For example, attach a small bag to your pack strap or a bum bag to keep your lollies and camera within easy reach.
Some things to keep you comfortable:
Lip balm, blister pads, ear plugs, 3B Action Cream (if you get chafing, this stuff is gold!).
